What to Expect from a Family Photo Session in Calgary and the Rockies

Planning family photos? Here is what to expect from your session, from choosing a setting to prepping the kids, and how to keep the whole thing relaxed and fun.

What to Expect from a Family Photo Session in Calgary and the Rockies

Family photos have a way of sneaking up on you. One day your kids are tiny, and the next they are taller than you remember agreeing to. A family session is really about pressing pause on a season of life and keeping it, the real, warm, slightly chaotic version of your family rather than a stiff lineup of forced smiles. If you are thinking about booking one, here is exactly what to expect, so it feels easy from the start.

Quick answer

A family session with me is relaxed and led by your family's own pace, not by stiff posing. You can choose an outdoor, mountain, in-home, or studio setting depending on the feeling you want. The happiest photos come from comfortable clothes, well-rested and fed kids, and a willingness to play a little. Most sessions are short and easygoing, and your gallery captures the genuine connection between you rather than a row of say-cheese smiles.

Key facts

  • Sessions suit every age, from newborns to grandparents, and siblings are always welcome.
  • There are four main settings to choose from: outdoor, mountain, in-home, and studio.
  • The most flattering light is early morning or the hour before sunset.
  • Comfortable, well-rested, and recently fed children make for the happiest photos.
  • Autumn and summer are popular, but every season has its own charm in and around Calgary.
  • You will receive your images in a private online gallery to view, download, and share.

When should you book a family session?

Whenever life feels worth remembering, which is honestly always. That said, a few moments are especially popular: a new baby, a milestone birthday, grandparents visiting from out of town, or simply the realization that it has been a few years. Autumn is a favourite for the golden light and colour, and summer evenings are lovely too, though I photograph families happily in every season. Popular fall weekends book up early, so if you have a season in mind it is worth reaching out ahead. If you are weighing timing, my season-by-season guide breaks down how each part of the year looks.

Where should you have your family photos?

The right setting comes down to the feeling you want and how your family is most comfortable. Here are the four main options.

SettingWhat it is likeBest for
Outdoor sessionsA park, the prairies, or a favourite spot in soft natural lightFamilies who want an easy, natural feel close to home
Mountain sessionsBig Canadian Rockies scenery and a little gentle adventureFamilies who love the outdoors and dramatic backdrops
In-home sessionsRelaxed and personal, in your own space and your own lightNew babies, little ones, and cozy everyday moments
Studio sessionsA controlled, cozy space with consistent light and a timeless backdropFamilies who want a clean, classic look in any weather

What is a family session actually like?

Easygoing, and a lot more fun than most people expect. Rather than asking everyone to sit still and smile on command, which is a tall order for most little ones, we go for a walk, play a game, or simply spend time together while I photograph it. I will offer gentle direction when it helps, a prompt here, a bit of guidance there, but the goal is always to let your family be yourselves. Kids relax when they are allowed to be kids, and parents relax when they are not managing a performance. That is when the real photos happen: the belly laughs, the piggyback rides, the quiet snuggle at the end.

How do you prepare kids, and parents, for photos?

A little preparation goes a long way, and none of it is complicated.

  • Schedule around naps and meals so everyone arrives rested and fed, not hungry or overtired.
  • Keep the mood light. If you are relaxed about it, your kids will be too.
  • Bring small comforts: snacks, water, a favourite toy, and a spare outfit just in case.
  • Tell little ones it is a fun adventure or a game, rather than a formal photoshoot.
  • Let go of expecting everyone to look at the camera at once. The best frames rarely come from that anyway.

What should everyone wear?

Choose clothes your family feels comfortable and like themselves in, and coordinate with a few complementary tones rather than matching exactly. Soft, earthy colours photograph beautifully, and a bit of texture adds interest. For the full breakdown, including how to dress little ones and what to avoid, my guide on what to wear for family photos in the Rockies covers it all.

How long is a session, and when will we get our photos?

Most family sessions are refreshingly short, usually somewhere between half an hour and an hour or so, which is just about the limit of most children's patience anyway. After your session, you will receive a sneak peek before long, with your full gallery of edited images delivered a little while later in a private online gallery you can view, download in high resolution, and share with family. Print ordering is available right from the gallery, so turning your favourites into something for the wall is simple.

Frequently asked questions

What if my kids will not cooperate?

This is the number one worry I hear, and truly, it is my job, not yours. Meltdowns, shy moments, and wiggly toddlers are all completely normal and part of the fun. I never force a child to pose or perform. We take breaks, follow their energy, and often the "difficult" moments turn into the most honest, memorable photos of the whole session.

What is the best age for children's photos?

Every age is wonderful, and there is no wrong time. Newborns are sleepy and snuggly, toddlers are full of personality, and older kids can be真 goofy and expressive. If you have a new baby, you might also like my guide to newborn photography and the first year story, which covers timing for those early weeks.

What time of day is best for family photos?

For outdoor and mountain sessions, early morning or the hour before sunset gives the softest, warmest light. For little ones, we also balance the light against nap and mealtimes, since a happy child matters more than perfect light. In-home and studio sessions are more flexible, so we can plan them around your family's rhythm.

Can we include grandparents or extended family?

Absolutely, and I love when families do. Multi-generational photos are a gift, especially while everyone is together. Just let me know who will be joining so we can plan the timing and setting to suit a larger group.

How do we book a session?

Reach out through the contact page with a little about your family and the kind of session you are imagining, and I will share availability and help you choose a setting and time that fits.
