Newborn Photography and the Story of the First Year

Thinking about newborn photos? Here is when to book, what a session is really like, and how the first year story follows your baby from pregnancy to their first birthday.

Newborn Photography and the Story of the First Year

There is nothing quite like the first weeks with a new baby. The days blur together, everyone is a little tired and a lot in love, and the tiny details you swear you will never forget somehow start to fade almost immediately. Newborn photography is really about holding onto that fleeting season, and it is one of my favourite things to do. If you are thinking about photos for your little one, here is what to know.

When should you book newborn photos?

The short answer is sooner than you might think. Most families reach out during pregnancy, often in the second or third trimester, to reserve a spot, since due dates are unpredictable and I keep newborn sessions loosely scheduled around your baby's arrival. The session itself usually happens in the first two weeks, ideally within about the first ten days, when babies are at their sleepiest and most likely to curl up in those soft, dreamy poses. That said, if your newborn stage has already flown by, please do not worry. Older babies make wonderful photographs too, just with a different, more awake and interactive feel.

What is a newborn session actually like?

Gentle and unhurried, always. Newborns keep their own schedule, so we work at your baby's pace rather than the clock's. I keep the room warm and calm, build in plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and the occasional outfit change, and never force a pose or anything that does not feel comfortable and safe for your little one. Some babies sleep through the whole thing, others want to be awake and held, and both are perfectly lovely. Your only job is to focus on your baby while I quietly capture the tiny fingers, the sleepy yawns, and the way you look at them.

In-home or studio: which is right for you?

Both are beautiful, and it really comes down to the feeling you want. An in-home session is relaxed and personal, with your own light and your own space, and it captures this chapter exactly where you are living it. A studio session offers a controlled, cozy environment with consistent light and a simple, timeless backdrop, which some families prefer for that clean, classic look. If you are not sure, I am happy to talk it through. You can read more about in-home sessions and studio sessions to get a feel for each.

What about maternity photos?

Maternity photography is a lovely way to begin the story before your baby arrives, though it is entirely optional. If you would like them, the most comfortable window is usually around your seventh or eighth month, when your bump is beautifully round but you are not yet too tired to enjoy the session. Many families like pairing a maternity session with their newborn photos so the two chapters sit together in the same collection.

The first year story: watching your baby grow

Babies change so quickly in that first year that a single session can only tell part of the story. That is the idea behind the first year story, a collection of sessions that follow your child through the milestones, often beginning with maternity or the newborn days, then a sitter session around the middle of the year when they are all smiles and personality, and finishing with the first birthday. Watching a baby go from those sleepy early weeks to a giggling one-year-old, and having it all documented, is genuinely one of the joys of this work. You can see how it comes together on the first year story page.

Do you photograph older babies, siblings, and the whole family?

Absolutely. Not every family starts in the newborn stage, and there is no wrong time to begin. Siblings are welcome and often make the sweetest, funniest frames, and I love including parents and grandparents so the photos hold everyone who is part of this season. If your little one is already crawling, walking, or running you ragged, we simply lean into a more playful, on-the-move kind of session.

A gentle, unhurried experience

If there is one thing I want you to take away, it is that this should feel easy. New parenthood is a lot, and a photo session should be a calm, low-pressure hour or two, not one more thing to stress about. I follow your baby's lead, keep things flexible, and quietly document the real tenderness of this time, so that years from now you can look back and remember not just how your baby looked, but how these first days actually felt.

If you are expecting or your little one has recently arrived, I would love to hear from you. You can explore family and lifestyle sessions, browse common questions, or get in touch to plan your session. Because newborn timing is unpredictable, reaching out during pregnancy is always a good idea.
